Biomedical Science is an academic field that has dedicated itself to the advancement of human health. The field aims to continuously research a cure for diseases such as dengue, HIV and many more. For instance, the coronavirus pandemic swept everyone at their feet when they were least expecting it and made the whole world stop. A year ago, we did not know what the virus was, basically sighing in frustration as it had impacted the global economy and the unemployment rates were rising globally.

Fast forward a year, we have several vaccines that have gone on to clinical trials and been approved for mass vaccinations in several countries. This is where the biomedical science field came in, and everyone involved in the area worked relentlessly to provide a vaccine that would stop the spread of the virus. What could have taken years to discover was done within almost a year since the pandemic started.

If you feel that you’re up for the challenge of researching, experimenting and would like to make a difference in improving population health or preventing a disease, this course might be just the right one for you.

What is Biomedical Science?

Biomedical science is often at the heart of groundbreaking research in the healthcare industry. It focuses on areas of biology and chemistry that are relevant to healthcare. Biomedical science is often used to develop new treatments and therapies for human illness, diseases and disabilities.

It is estimated that $240 billion is spent on biomedical research and development every year to explore a scientific solution to health problems worldwide.

Some of the medical condition that biomedical scientist is currently researching to provide a solution is:

  • Diabetics
  • Cancer
  • Anaemia
  • Dengue
  • AIDS

What does a Biomedical Scientist do?

A biomedical scientist conducts scientific and laboratory research to support diagnosis and treatment of human disease. They test, analyse and review fluids and body tissue to advise medical practitioners. However, a biomedical scientist does not require medical training and does not come in contact with patients.

The Differences between Biomedical Science and Biotechnology

Although Biomedical and Biotechnology might sound similar and overlap in several areas they differ in their ultimate goals.

The Biotechnology sector includes food, medical, agriculture and plants, whilst Biomedical science is applied solely for the medical and healthcare fields.

Although Biotechnology does cover the study of microorganisms such as bacteria but not from the medical field aspect. Biomedical science, however, covers studies of the science behind cancer and improves the research and treatment for the disease.

Who Should Study Biomedical Science

  • You want to help save lives: Creating new technologies, improving old ones, researching solutions to global problems, or building and repairing biomedical equipment, your studies in the biomedical sciences will benefit the good of humanity.
  • You love working in a lab: Working in biomedical fields means you have to dedicate yourself hours of working in the lab and conducting research. While some might find the lab tedious and repetitive and boring, it should not bother you if you are passionate about working on groundbreaking research even if it means you might fail multiple times before you achieve the experience outcome you want.
  • High accuracy and attention to details: As a Biomedical scientist, you would need to have a high level of accuracy especially when dealing with experiments and attention to details as a small error could impact the research and experiment outcomes you have been working on for months.

Skills Required for Biomedical Scientists

  • Research: Conducting research is vital in making scientific breakthroughs and understanding human diseases.
  • Analytical: Reviewing test results requires attention to details and the ability to analyse results, patterns and unexpected outcomes.
  • Numeracy: Most of the research work involves analysing statistics and data, so mathematics plays a crucial role in the field.
  • Communication: Biomedical science involves working with patient samples, thus you would need to communicate with other professionals in a similar field such as doctors.

Duties and Roles of a Biomedical Scientist

  • Test biological samples
  • Research screening, causes and effects of diseases
  • Write medical research reports
  • Analyse data and statistics from medical research and experiments

Core Subjects Taught in Biomedical Science Degree

  • Anatomy: Introduction to human anatomy. Students will learn the macroscopic structure of human organ systems including the musculoskeletal, nervous and visceral systems.

  • Genetics: Core concepts of the many underlying diverse fields of biology- ranging from medicine, biochemistry and microbiology to ecology, evolution and environmental sciences.
  • Cells to Organism: Fundamental concepts that allow organisms to function, with some focus on the human body & other higher organisms.
  • Biochemistry & Microbiology: Provides an understanding of key concepts on biochemistry and molecular biology.

Career Options with a Biomedical Science Degree

A degree in Biomedical Science can lead to a range of careers in the science and medical field. Biomedical Science career paths are usually focused on research, analysis and developments and do not restrict one from only working in the health industry but also other fields such as education, research, sales and hospital and institutional work.

  • Medical Sales Representative: Required to sell the company’s product to a variety of customers including doctors and pharmacists.
  • Microbiologist: Study microorganism and processes.
  • Biotechnologist: Researches on plants, animals and genetics.
  • Forensic Scientist: Provides scientific evidence for legal cases.
  • Biomedical Scientist: Analyse fluid samples to support clinician diagnose and treat patients.
